The Green Bay Packers capitalized on the 2024 NFL Draft, enhancing their roster with 12 promising rookies across seven rounds.

In the days following the draft, they also signed several undrafted free agents, intensifying competition for roster spots and preparing the team for numerous position battles during training camp. The rookie minicamp, held this past weekend, offered a preliminary opportunity to evaluate these newcomers and their potential to secure a place on the season’s official 53-man roster.

During rookie minicamp, defensive tackle James Ester, a recent addition from Northern Illinois, suffered an upper-body injury, according to Packers’ reporter Matt Schneidman.

Ester, who had joined the Packers immediately after the draft on April 30, featured a commendable college record as a four-year team captain, a two-time MVP, and an impressive stat line of 121 tackles, 20 tackles for loss, and nine sacks over 43 starts. His performance in 2023 placed him 23rd among all interior defenders in run-stop rate.

Unfortunately, Ester’s aspirations were dampened when he suffered the upper-body injury on Saturday, casting a shadow over his immediate future with the team.

The Packers’ defensive line, while not reinforced by draft picks this year, remains impressive. Starters likely include Devonte Wyatt and Kenny Clark at the tackle positions, supported on the edges by Preston Smith and Rashan Gary.

Depth players like Karl Brooks, Jonathan Ford, and Colby Wooden, who were drafted in recent years, will also compete for playtime, making Ester’s path to a roster spot even more challenging.

As training camp approaches, the Green Bay Packers and their coaching staff will undoubtedly keep a close eye on Ester’s recovery and readiness. The hope is that his injury will not impede his chances of competing effectively for a spot on the team as the season approaches.
